6 Great FeedFlares To Spruce Up Your Feedburner Blog
Posted by: eturner on March 27th, 2007
Yesterday we asked one of our engineers to check out the Feedburner FeedFlare API and use it to build some example AlchemyPoint mashups. FeedFlares are little Javascript embeds that add functionality to a blog’s website or syndication feed. We use several FeedFlares on our company blog (Digg this, Save to del.icio.us, etc.), and thought creating some new ones would be a great way to demonstrate AlchemyPoint’s underlying technology.
The folks at FeedBurner give some great ideas on their “101 FeedFlares for a Better Tomorrow” web page as a way for developers to get started. We’ve implemented five of these suggestions, plus a bonus FeedFlare:
#1: Furl.net Stats (101 FeedFlares Challenge #32)
Shows the number of times an item has been posted to Furl.net (social bookmarking website), and a “Furl It!” link.

To use this Flare on your blog, go here.
#2: Tailrank.com Stats (101 FeedFlares Challenge #63)
Shows the number of blogs linking to an item on Tailrank.com (blog link-tracking website).

To use this Flare on your blog, go here.
#3: Myspace Friend Count (101 FeedFlares Challenge #97)
Shows the blog owner’s Myspace friend count, and an “Add me as a Myspace friend” link.

To use this Flare on your blog, go here.
#4: Recent Last.fm Listening Activity (101 FeedFlares Challenge #39)
Shows the last song listened to by the blog owner on Last.fm (music website), and a user profile link.

To use this Flare on your blog, go here.
#5: Recent Del.icio.us Post Activity (101 FeedFlares Challenge #99)
Shows the last item bookmarked by the blog owner on Del.icio.us (social bookmarking website).

To use this Flare on your blog, go here.
#6 (Bonus): Next Meetup.com Event Stats
Shows the blog owner’s next Meetup.com event, and the number of Yes / Maybe responses received so far.

To use this Flare on your blog, go here.
All of these FeedFlares are powered by our AlchemyPoint Server product, which can easily mash up back-end services (Meetup.com, Myspace.com, etc.) for display on your blog, syndication feed, or website. For the time being, we’re making these Flares freely available to all with no request limits. Depending on the popularity/uptake of these Flares we may institute limits in the future.

Very cool! Thanks for building these new FeedFlares. We love the dynamic-ness of these and will be sure to update our catalog to reflect your additions. Cheers, Traci

Am I the only one for whom the Last.fm flare returns a “could not find a valid FeedFlare” error?
6. eturner | May 19th, 2007 at 7:39 am
Rae, we had some server troubles, but all should be working again!

my Last.fm flare worked for a few days, then “Error accessing Last.fm profile”. I had to remove it..

Same here, the last.fm-thing does not work for me. It says it can’t access my profile, though the link’s correct and all.
Anyone care to help? Thanks!

Hey,
The myspace friend counter is great. I would like to integrate the xml into a flash banner.
Would you be able to add cross domain policy to your site so that I can use it?
example:
http://www.crossdomainxml.org/
If you could open it to all domains ala flickr:
http://api.flickr.com/crossdomain.xml
That would be unreal!
Cheers,
Dave

I’m getting the same error. The FeedFlare created by Orchestr8 gives the following Dynamic Flare link:
http://feedflares.orch8.net/lastfm/v1/lastfm?lastfmUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.last.fm%2Fuser%2Fjoeymcallister
It appears that it would work if it used the following link instead (as my most recent listen shows up there), but I think that’s an alteration that needs to be made on Orchestr8’s side of things:
http://feedflares.orch8.net/lastfm/v1/lastfm?lastfmUrl=http://www.last.fm/user/joeymcallister
Very cool flare, though. I hope it gets fixed soon. Thanks!

I’m having problems with the last.fm and the myspace flares as well. Thanks for making these. Do you have any idea what I can do to fix it?

We’ve just updated a number of the Feedflares. Furl, Myspace, and Last.fm should all be working more reliably now. Thanks for the continued feedback!
